Weinstein Named Big Ten Gymnast of the Week

Updated: February 11, 2013

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Alina Weinstein's four years of hard work and dedication in an Illinois leotard resulted in a career defining moment Saturday night, when they senior scored a career high 39.550 in the all-around competition. The score tied 2011 alum Allison Buckley for the highest mark ever posted by an Illini. This afternoon, the Big Ten conference recognized Weinstein's talents and named her co-gymnast of the week alongside Nebraska's Jessie DeZiel.

At Minnesota, Alina Weinstein placed first on floor (9.925), first on balance beam (9.900), second on vault (9.875), fourth on bars (9.850) and claimed the all-around victory, tying her career highs on both beam and floor in the process. Saturday's success brings her season title total to six, while bumping her career titles to 23.

The Big Ten weekly accolade is the second of Weinstein's career, previously receiving the honor Jan. 30, 2012 when she recorded a 39.400 all-around victory over Michigan. This week's award also marks the 13th time an Illini has been named Big Ten gymnast of the week.

Weinstein and the rest of the Orange and Blue will return to action Feb. 16, after posting a season high 196.350 against Minnesota. Saturday's meet will be the Illini's annual Gym Jam promotion in conjunction with the men's gymnastics squad. The meet kicks off at 4 p.m. CT and the first 500 fans will receive a free Illini gymnastics water bottle.
