URBANA -- Sixteen people from in and around Urbana got a big thank you Thursday for helping keep the city safe. Officers and others in the community were honored at a ceremony.

They celebrated with their peers and family members. People were awarded for helping out in all kinds of ways. Two University of Illinois police officers were given awards for their service while they were off-duty. One stopped to help a shooting victim he saw while he was driving.

Other certificates were given to people who live in Urbana neighborhoods, like a woman who helps out with a block watch and a man who helped bust open a copper theft ring. A handful of Urbana officers were honored for their work on the job. The city's animal control officer won Employee of the Year. She trained officers about handling dangerous animals. Matt Mecum was named Officer of the Year.

The officers were nominated by their peers. Some of those scheduled to get awards couldn't make it to the ceremony because they were responding to a SWAT situation.
