WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Futuregen 2.0 is now ready to move into its second phase. The U.S. Department of Energy announced its new agreement with Futuregen.

This agreement means the Alliance can begin the design stage of the clean energy project. It will upgrade a power plant in Meredosia.

The Morgan County facility will store more than 90% of the plant's emissions underground. The Department of Energy is contributing more than $1 billion to the project. Construction is set to begin in spring 2014 and be completed by December 2017.
