CHAMPAIGN -- Most of us will do anything to avoid cold weather, but a lot of people don't have that luxury. Dozens participated in this years "One Winter Night." It's an annual fundraiser to support the homeless.

Supporters were outside in cardboard boxes for 12-hours. This year it was held both in downtown Champaign and on the UI campus.

It turned statistics into reality for people involved. It's something those who work with the homeless community says is important.

"Some people have places where they'll go stay with a friend for a night here, a friend for a night there. If you have that many friends, but a lot of people don't have that many people they can trust, so they're left out here by themselves," Douglas Gritmacker said.

Volunteers have collected $40,000 so far. Some donations still have to be added in. They beat last year's total by $10,000.
