URBANA -- A new store could be coming to the southeast side of town. Developers are looking to open a grocery store where Jerry's IGA used to be. WCIA-3's Jessica Shaw has the story.

It's been empty since 2004. But soon, this could be the site of a new Ruler Foods.

"I think it's great. It brings in jobs and lots of people working."

A welcome change for neighbors.

"I mean, this store's been empty and looking kind of cruddy for a long time. You've got the bakery over there and little things moving in."

There are several other businesses already in the Southgate Shopping Center. Places like Pro-Nail welcome whatever traffic a new grocery store would bring.

"A lot of people say they don't go this way because there's nothing around here. When they come, the grocery people can start coming."

City officials say they've been working for years to redevelop the lot. Details still need to be finalized, but it would be the third Ruler Foods for the area. The chain already plans to open up stores in Champaign and Danville.

"It will be great for this part of town because you bring more money to Urbana period, and this part needs revitalizing."

The store is expected to open this summer.
