CHAMPAIGN -- An endangered Alligator Snapping Turtle finds a home at an elementary school. It's part of a project to educate students at Booker T. Washington on wildlife protection.

Students got to meet the turtle during Friday's assembly. In celebration, they put on a puppet show and wrote poems about the turtle. They even voted on his name, "Snappy."

Student Minji Choy says, "The turtle is not a pet. We're helping it because it's an endangered species. So, we're helping it so we can let it out after we take care of it."

"Snappy" hatched at the Peoria Zoo, and will later be released by the Department of Natural Resources.
