CHAMPAIGN -- An Illinois Department of Transportation grant will make the city more bike-friendly. It received $1.7 million to put towards its Windsor Road expansion project.

Right now, the road is only two lanes. Bikers and pedestrians have to share it with cars. There's already a state project that will expand Windsor Road's overpass bridge running over I-57. Crews plan to add wider shoulders to accommodate bicyclists.

The IDOT grant money will go towards expanding the road on either side of the bridge. That project is expected to cost around $2.2 million. City leaders want to add bike lanes and sidewalks. David Clark is the city's assistant engineer.

"We going to be able to make a safe accommodation for the bikes," said Clark. "A safe accommodation for pedestrians."

The two-part project is expected to take two years. Construction for the state portion will begin in spring 2013, and construction for the city portion will start spring 2014. Crews plan to complete it by fall 2014.
