New construction shows city's expansion
Updated: January 31, 2013
In just the past three weeks, $50 million has gone into expanding the City of Champaign. Close to $30 million went into the Hyatt construction. $11 million is going into the construction off Prospect.
In all of last year, $113 million was spent on construction licensing. Building Safety says they're working to pass that number. With nearly $50 million in licensing just this month, they say they're well on their way.
"We think it means that things are on the upswing construction wise, development wise. If you take a drive through downtown Champaign you'll see construction going on at just about every corner," Building Safety Supervisor Larry Happ said.
The Hyatt should be done by 2014. The dealership will finish shortly thereafter. Building Safety says a lot more construction on Green Street is on the way. They couldn't go into specifics, but say there's a lot in the works for the coming year.
