WASHINGTON, D.C. -- After four years in office, Ray LaHood announced Tuesday, he's retiring from his post as Transportation Secretary. The Peoria native is the only republican left in President Obama's cabinet.

LaHood says he's proud of the work the Department of Transportation has done, including the Distracted Driving Initiative. He says his team helped "jump-start" the economy with $48 billion in transportation funding.

Longtime friend, Sheriff Mike McCoy, of Peoria County, says it's a loss for Central Illinois. LaHood says he will stay in office until a successor is chosen.
