High school students with disablities get equal rights on the playing field

CHAMPAIGN -- The rules are changing when it comes to high school sports. The U.S. Department of Education announced Friday that schools must give students with disabilities equal opportunities in extracurricular activities.

It includes all levels of sports, clubs and intramurals. That's something students with disabilities at the University of Illinois already have, but the head coach of the women's wheelchair basketball team is happy kids can start playing earlier now.

The rules say accommodations must be made for disabled students as long as it doesn't give them an advantage or change the sport in question. If existing sports don't meet the needs of disabled students, schools must create additional athletic programs for them.
