CHARLESTON -- A family rescued a dog from a shelter, now they say he's returned the favor.

"It was Walter's turn to rescue us."

Walter is blind and deaf, but he used one of his only senses left Thursday night. He smelled smoke and woke everyone up by scratching on the door.

Walter has a tumor the size of a football on his left leg, so he used his right leg to claw at the door. Jessica Bishop heard it and got out of bed. She realized a sheet had been kicked onto a heater. The room was filling with smoke and the sheet was very hot.

Bishop says Walter saved her and her husband's lives. She's had Walter for three years after his previous owner abandoned him in a crate on the side of the road.

Doctors say Walter is too old to undergo surgery to remove the tumor. He doesn't move around too much, but Bishop couldn't be more thankful he had this burst of energy last night.
