SPRINGFIELD -- A state lawmaker wants a new rule requiring those serving in the state's capital to undergo drug tests. Decatur Representative Bill Mitchell is sponsoring the bill.

Its main purpose is to require drug testing for people on welfare, but it also includes mandatory drug tests for members of the General Assembly. Mitchell says it's a compromise.

He says many of his constituents want to see people on welfare drug tested. Critics call it an "unreasonable search" and say it may be unconstitutional.

There is nothing wrong with lawmakers getting drug tested. If you apply for a job you get tested. People on public aid, which is my money should be tested, I don't want my money going for drugs. That momey is for food rent power bills. Not bingo, gambling and DRUGS.
