DECATUR -- A family isn't satisfied with the outcome of an investigation into their son's death.

"This was the worst day of my life," says Marci Hollgarth.

Matthew Hollgarth was shot last month during an argument with his girlfriend. She ran to another house for help and that homeowner fired his gun.

Wednesday, a coroner's jury of eight ruled the use of deadly force was justified. All agencies involved have completed their investigations, and as far as authorities are concerned, the case is closed.

It seems like the final chapter, but not for Marci Hollgarth. She says the night this happened, her son made a mistake. Police say he and his girlfriend were driving to her house when they got into an argument that turned physical.

His girlfriend ran to a home where a conservation officer lived and police say when Hollgarth broke in, the officer shot him in the chest. Marci Hollgarth says there was no reason for that shot to be fatal.

"I just want people to know that Matthew wasn't a bad person. He was a good kid. He didn't get in trouble with the law," says Hollgarth.

Macon County Coroner Michael Day says he wanted the jury's input for clarity. He asks for an inquest any time a suspicious death borders homicide and accident.

Comments

Key words here: He broke INTO the conservation officer's home...NOT the other way around! Yet...you watch...the media/justice system will crucify the officer for protecting himself. Marci Hollgarth says there was no reason for that shot to be fatal. "
