SPRINGFIELD -- The State Board of Education wants to raise the bar on standardized testing. It's to push students to perform better on tests and compete with students taking other tests. The test won't change, but the grading scale will.

The state is raising the standards so children in Illinois can compete with students from other states to better prepare them for life after school. Currently, more than 80% of students in Illinois meet or exceed the current standards. Once the new scale takes effect, that number will drop to 60%.
