SPRINGFIELD -- The State Board of Education is determining its budget for next year. It says it needs a lot more money for our schools.

Our state's education leaders want nearly $5 billion more for next year than they're getting currently. They say school funding is too low, and the money is needed to get them back on track.

Schools have lost almost $1 billion in funding the past few years. The state's budget problems mean much less money is available. But, districts are starting to feel the pinch.

The state board says the quality of education here is slipping. It says it knows the state's in a tough spot, but spending more now will be a big help down the road.

Board members spent the day figuring out exactly how much is needed to get through the year. A final version of the budget will be voted on Thursday.

It's just a recommendation though. Governor Quinn is the one who determines what amount makes it into the state's total budget. Lawmakers then get the final say.
