OAKLAND -- A broken water line left classrooms and hallways underwater in Coles County. Now students are at home until it's cleaned up.

It happened Tuesday night at Lake Crest Elementary. When water started shooting out of the floor, teachers and volunteers did everything they could to stop it. Sixty people rushed to the school to help clean-up. They stayed until 1 am.

There was 2-3" of standing water causing the floor to buckle. Some of the classrooms were filled with dirt from the standing water. Fans were turned on to dry things out, but the school is without heat as well. Everyone in the community is coming together to turn the negative into a positive for the district.

A contracting team was at the school. No dollar estimate has been given for the damage. School will be closed until Monday at the earliest.
