CHICAGO -- Former Governor George Ryan is getting a few steps closer to freedom. The Chicago Sun-Times reports he'll move to a halfway house at the end of the month and spend the rest of his time there.

Right now, he's behind bars in Terre Haute, Indiana. He'll be moved to a work-release program in Chicago. Ryan is serving 6 years for corruption. It ends July 4.

"Everybody deserves a second chance. He hasn't killed anybody, so I feel that he needs a second chance," said Connie Scott of Champaign.

David Thornton of Urbana disagreed saying, "Innocent people lost their lives due to illegal truck drivers having their licenses. People lost their lives due to his scandal. He should not get special treatment."

Ryan was granted a furlough day in 2011 to visit his wife who was dying.
