Students volunteer by promoting fire safety
Updated: January 22, 2013
The timing couldn't have been more fitting. The city experienced a deadly house fire just last week; four people were killed. Crews are still trying to determine a cause.
The Red Cross hopes to prevent more tragedies like that from happening. It's one reason the organization teamed up with students from UIS. Together, they passed out door hangers. They include all kinds of fire safety tips.
About 50 students took part, all of them dividing up into smaller groups. They targeted neighborhoods on the east side of town, where firefighters and the Red Cross say fires appear to be more common.
UIS students volunteer every year as a part of Martin Luther King, Jr., Day. A man well-known for his commitment and service to community.
Firefighters say one of the biggest ways to help prevent a fire is by having a working smoke detector. They say it cuts the risk of dying in a fire in half.
