URBANA -- Many children may feel like the odd one out as a minority in public schools. So, Monday, they came together to talk about ways to make the community more united.

The theme fits with Martin Luther King, Jr., Day. The students are now ready to take action in their neighborhoods. WCIA 3's Anna Carrera finds out what they have in store for the future.

Many are brutally honest, but optimistic. It's been 50-years since Martin Luther King, Jr., gave his famous "I Have a Dream" speech. Even now, people from all different backgrounds are working to make his dream a reality.

Today's students are decades removed from the issue of segregation, but many effects are still there. Some students said we live in a less prejudiced time. But others said it's still there, just more hidden. The students spent the day talking about what makes them special.

"It's not just enough to celebrate freedoms, but to come together in unique ways for justice and peace and love," said McKinley Presbyterian Church Executive Director Keith Harris.

"I think it's everyone's responsibility because it's everybody's community and we need to join together and do it all," said Champaign Central High 10th grader Bethany Peppers.

The students also talked about how they could change their communities in a physical sense, like cleaning up trash and beautifying their neighborhoods.
