URBANA -- Recycling is on the rise among families in Urbana. The city says they've seen a 24 percent increase in recyclables collected last year. For single family households taking part in the curbside U-Cycle program:
  • Crews collected 2,375 tons of recycling in 2012
  • Compare to that 2011, when crews only got 1,866 tons of recyclables.
Numbers for the multi-family U-cycle program are up too:
  • 831 tons of recycling was collected last year
  • Back in 2011, 685 tons of recycling was collected.
Urbana thinks it's many outreach programs have helped boost numbers. Courtney Rushforth is the recycling coordinator.

"We utilize University of Illinois volunteers to door-hang the apartment sand once we do that we see a rise in recyclables collected," said Rushforth.

The city is also looking into expanding its recycling program.
