URBANA -- A University of Illinois research team got a big push to help develop technology many of us use everyday. It can be used to improve cell phones, computers, cameras and so much more.

They got $30 million to start this new project. The University of Illinois was picked to lead a team of seven other universities in this research. Their focus is on enhancing the way circuits process information and how much they can store. As cell phones and other technological devices get smaller, they need smaller systems to keep them running. Student and faculty researchers will find ways to make sure these devices can still do the job. Part of that includes making devices that can think for themselves.

"That's what we are interested in," said Naresh Shanbhag, who is an electrical and computer engineering professor. "We want to make sense of the world around us. We like to have our computers help us do that. So that the goal of the center."

This will help create the next generation of computing devices. Researchers said the new devices will be high performance, more energy efficient and cost less. The battery life would be better as well. The research involves computing on nanoscale fabrics. Those small things could make a big impact on a lot of electronics we use.
