Illini women's hoops to celebrate Title IX

Updated: January 17, 2013
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (UI Release) - The University of Illinois women's basketball team will celebrate the 40th anniversary of Title IX being signed into law by recognizing women in the Champaign-Urbana area who have served as pioneers in athletics and community service at its game on Sunday, Jan. 20. The contest begins at 2 p.m., with the Fighting Illini hosting Northwestern.

Women being honored include those who have made an impact at the University of Illinois by donating or by pioneering the way for women in athletics. Others have given back to the community through the CASA program, the United Way of Champaign, Big Brothers Big Sisters and other organizations. Many hold prominent positions in organizations or businesses around the community like Carle Hospital, the University of Illinois Credit Union, Busey Bank, the City of Urbana, the Champaign Chamber of Commerce, and Visit Champaign County.

WCIA-TV evening news anchor Jennifer Roscoe will serve as the event's emcee, interviewing some of the women who are being recognized on the court before the game. Roscoe also will host the on-court halftime recognition.

In addition, student-athletes from Fighting Illini volleyball, soccer, softball and women's gymnastics teams will be signing autographs on the lower concourse of Assembly Hall from 1:30-2.
