CHAMPAIGN -- U of I students are hard at work building a car, but it's nothing like what you see on the street.

It runs off of hydrogen. It's designed by students and perform like an everyday car.

Students are putting their car in the Shell eco-marathon in April. It's a national competition that challenges students to build eco-friendly cars.

Last year they broke a national record for their hydrogen fuel car, and want to beat their own record this year.

"Working with all these people, it's a great collabrotive experience. It prepares us for the real world. We're all gonna be working in an industry to develop technology such as this." Senior Sanat Bhole said.

The shell eco-marathon will be in Texas this year.
