CHAMPAIGN -- MTD hopes people in the community pay attention to some of its new signs. It's part of a safety campaign they launched this week.

One of the main goals is to remind people to be aware of what's around. And it's not just for people who ride the bus. Since 2004, two students have died in bus-related incidents. But organizers said this is more of a proactive effort to encourage a safe environment. They're emphasizing being alert, being aware and being seen.

"We have close calls virtually every single day," said MTD assistant managing director Tom Costello. "And I think any motorist in the community would say the same thing. What we want to do is continue to remind our students in particular about being aware of the kinds of things that are going on around them."

They also have signs in the MTD terminal reminding people to be alert when it comes to the baggage they see around them. This isn't the first safety campaign MTD has come out with. But they said it's important to remind people to be careful.
