CHAMPAIGN -- Students and staff at Champaign Central High School are in shock after finding out one of their assistant football coaches passed away on Thursday.

Rodney Egelston started working with the varsity football team this year. Head coach Brett Roberts said he already made a big impact on the boys in the program. Egelston had been working with the guys through the winter to get them ready for next season. His athletes found out about this last week. Egelston helped coach the offensive and defensive linemen. Roberts said Egleston was totally committed to the students there. That makes this loss even harder to deal with.

"He was a fun guy to be around, contagious laugh, made everyone around him smile and laugh and it's going to be tough," said Roberts.

Roberts said Egelston was like his right-hand man and believed in helping the school turn the football team around. Egelston played footbal for Urbana High School. His family said he also helped out with youth wrestling groups in the area.

Services will be at the Stone Creek Church in Urbana on Tuesday. There will be a reception from 5-7 PM and a Celebration of Life service starts at 7 PM.
