Urbana hospitals switching from baby blankets
Updated: January 11, 2013
URBANA -- Urbana hospitals are doing away with baby blankets.
It's a way to make sure safety start as soon as the newborn arrives. Both Provena Covenant and Carle Hospital will be using Halo Sleep Sacks instead. The sacks zip up so the babies can't wiggle of out them.
The hospitals will be switching over next month. This eliminates the need for blankets, which sometimes can be a suffocation hazard. Babies can kick them of or accidentally pull them over their mouths. The sleep sacks also remind parents that babies should be sleeping on their backs, something experts say will protect them from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.
"We try to start teach the right way," said Carol Halverson with Provena Covenant. "It's just something that people don't think of."
Provena United Samaritan Medical Center in Danville is already using the sleep sack.
