SPRINGFIELD -- Lawmakers are back at the Capitol for their spring session and for some it is their very first day on the job.

Thursday lawmakers old and new spent the day doing orientation and organization. Now that everyone is official, our newest lawmakers started settling into their new surroundings. The day was filled with meetings too. Both houses used their first day back to fine tune their rules and procedures. Lawmakers also sorted out who will serve on each committee.

Rep. Sue Scherer (D-Decatur) says her first day is exhausting but exciting. Scherer was a teacher before becoming a lawmaker Wednesday. She says she still has to get used to having an office instead of a classroom. She is already feeling comfortable in her new surroundings though. She led the Pledge of Allegiance during the first House session.
