Pension reform on hold for now

SPRINGFIELD -- It looks like the can will be kicked down the road once again. Lawmakers ended session without a vote on pension reform. The new General Assembly will have to tackle the issue instead.

The latest plan developed by Representative Elaine Nekritz and Senator Daniel Biss was never called to the House floor for a vote.
Now, they'll have to refile the bill once the new G.A. is sworn into office.

Rep. Nekritz says the proposal will go back to its original version introduced back in December. One that included a plan to shift costs for teacher pensions onto local school districts. Something republicans had an issue with because they say it would cause cities to have to raise property taxes.

Governor Quinn wanted lawmakers to vote on a plan by today, but that deadline has come and gone. He says he will continue to work with legislative leaders to find a solution for the soaring pension debt. It's currently costing the state about $17 million a day.

The new General Assembly will be sworn in tomorrow afternoon. Legislative session begins after that.
