Urbana hotel and motel business growing
Updated: January 8, 2013
URBANA -- Mayor Laurel Prussing says business is up, even though the city is spending less on tourism.
Prussing is presenting new numbers on how much Urbana hotels and motels bring in. Those businesses earned more than $800,000 this past year. It's up by almost 36 percent compared to the previous year.
These numbers come after Urbana agreed to raise the motel/hotel tax by one percent. Prussing also decided to pull funding from the county's commerce group, Champaign Visitor's Bureau, to cut costs.
"People were afraid it was going to put us at a disadvantage with Champaign, but it didn't," said Prussing.
She says the cuts and motel/hotel tax hike helped save city jobs.
