CHAMPAIGN -- Everyone is getting ready to ring in the new year. But along with partying, confetti and friends, the Champaign Fire Department wants you to remember safety.

If you're going out of town to celebrate, firefighters say take down all of your holiday lights.

Make sure everything is unplugged, including coffee makers, lamps and extension cords.

A lot of this may seem like common sense, but they say it's also a reminder we all need to hear.

"People don't expect fires to happen to them. Of course we know they do. It's just one of those things, not being afraid but just being cautious." Captain Glen Daniels said.

Firefighters remind you to make sure your smoke detector's batteries are working too. They also suggest having a neighbor keep an eye on your home.
