CHAMPAIGN -- Some volunteers were working hard to make Christmas dinner for people in need.

This is the third year the First Christian Church has put together a free holiday meal. Volunteers started cooking around 6:30 AM. They spent hours preparing turkey, mashed potatoes and all the fixings. Organizers said they served 500 people, which nearly filled the dining area. That's about 150 more than last year.

Organizers said they want to make sure people aren't alone or hungry on Christmas day. They finished the dinner with pumpkin pie for dessert. They said they plan to do it again next Christmas but may need to find a different place to do it if more people sign up.
