Internal police department investigation complete

Updated: December 21, 2012
CHAMPAIGN-Internal investigation of three incidents where police discharged their weapons is complete.

On September 9
th, officers fired their guns after someone entered a home in the 1200 block of W. Crispus Drive and threatened the people who lived there and then the officers. The investigation found the officers acted appropriately because there was an imminent threat of death or great bodily harm.

On November 17th, officers were called to the area of John and Crescent streets. A Pit Bull attacked a Labrador. Both dogs were shot, the Labrador died. The investigation is prompting some changes. Now, every firearm that's discharged will undergo a functional weapons inspection. The Use of Force Policy will be revised to include that an aggressive animal must present an imminent threat to a human before deadly force is authorized. Also, the department plans to start offering formal training on encountering aggressive dogs.

On November 20th, an officer shot off two rounds at the tires of a getaway car. A man broke out a second story window near the 200 block of W. Columbia then tried pulling someone else out through the broken window and taking off in the car. Again, in this case as well, all firearms discharged will undergo a functional weapons inspection and sworn employees will have to review the Use of Force Policy more often.
