CHAMPAIGN -- Christmas came early for the Champaign County Salvation Army.

Someone donated a 1914 gold coin. A bell-ringer discovered the donation when they were tallying up the totals. The group thinks the coin is worth around $200. Major Tom McDowell says it was a nice surprise for the holiday season.

"They pulled it out," said McDowell. "Everybody gathered around the table, ooh-ing and ahh-ing. We're all really excited we recieved it."

The Salvation Army is hoping to raise more than $450,000 with their red kettle campaign this year. They say the gold coin will certainly help.
