Guns in schools a good idea?
Updated: December 19, 2012
The Illinois State Rifle Association thinks it may have the answer. The group says adults should be allowed to carry guns in schools. They say it is the only way to make sure kids are safe, but school administrators are not so sure.
At Maroa-Forsyth Middle School, principal Brice Stewart says security ranks above all else. The building has a buzzer, cameras and plenty of locks. He says the school is always prepared for the worst. But gun advocates say it is not enough.
Richard Pearson of ISRA says schools need to immediately put in armed guards. He says the move is long overdue. But that means putting guns inside classrooms. Right now, you can not bring a gun within a thousand feet of a school.
Stewart says he does not know if arming teacher is the right thing to do. He says for now the school will keep doing what it can to protect students and keep building upon its practices in the future.
There are no solid ideas on the table just yet. ISRA says this is just something for lawmakers and school districts to consider moving forward.
