Finding a four-legged Christmas present

URBANA -- With Christmas just around the corner, some people may be thinking about giving a four-legged gift. Adoption workers at Champaign County's humane society said pets are popular picks this time of year.

Before you choose one, you should have a plan of action. That's especially true since having a pet can be a long-term commitment. They said it's important for your family members to meet the animal beforehand.

You can stop in and visit the animals as many times as you want before picking the right one. The workers said older cats and dogs sometimes make better pets than younger ones. That's because they're usually more well-behaved.
