Plans to redevelop housing project moving slowly

Plans to redevelop a Danville housing project are at a standstill. We're talking about an area called Fair Oaks on the city's North side.

The Danville Housing Authority planned to tear down part of it in the next three years. Now, it could take much longer all because of the economy.

Two years ago the Danville Housing Authority had a five year plan. However now there's little to no state and federal funding and that's slowed down this process another 5 to ten years.

For now they're making improvements to what they have, for example this past week DHA added a playground to Fair Oaks.

They've also put in new street lights and new appliances into all Fair Oaks residents' homes. Its part of a 5 million dollar energy project.

But despite these changes, at some point they hope to tear down a small chunk of the 40 buildings here and redevelop in a better location.

"Money drives the train so without the funding theres not going to be any new development. You're going to have to look for tax credits or other types of financing," says Danville Housing Authority Executive Director Greg Hilleary.

DHA needs that money to either build new housing for residents, give Section 8 vouchers or both. That's because by law dha has to find somewhere for displaced people to go.

Hilleary says a recent study shows there's still a great need for public housing in Danville.
