CHAMPAIGN -- Illinois is leading states in the fight against drunk driving.  The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is recommending that all states require Breath Alcohol Ignition Interlock Devices (BAIID) for first time DUI offenders.  It is something our state has been doing since 2009.

Since that time the number of people using them has gone up but IDOT says the number of drivers killed because of drunk driving has gone down by six percent.

Last year more than five thousand people in Illinois tried to get behind the wheel after drinking alcohol but the devices stopped them.

The Secretary of State's office says it costs people about $110 to rent one.
