Danville to review departments for cuts
Updated: December 11, 2012
DANVILLE - City leaders say cuts will be made, they just don't know where these cuts will be coming from.
The combination of rising pension costs and falling property taxes left the city of Danville with a $500 million gap to bridge. Mayor Scott Eisenhauer says the goal is to reduce, but not eliminate.
"Every position and department that we have will be under review," said Eisenhauer. "It's to see where we can decrease our expenditures."
It's a measure that the Danville Fire Department is familiar with. Three years ago, the city found itself in a similar situation.
"We gave up, voluntarily, nine positions to help the city save money," said Tony Koniecski. Koniecski is the Vice-President of Firefighter Local 429. "Obviously the less firemen we have, the harder it is to do our jobs properly."
There was talk earlier this year about whether closing down a station would save money. But right now, it's a waiting game for both city officials and firefighters.
"We're hoping they find cuts somewhere else," said Koniecski, "or another way to balance the budget."
At this point, city leaders say they have no idea where cuts will come from. They plan to start the process at the start of the year, and have a better idea by February 2013.
