CHAMPAIGN -- Police found the man accused of shooting a woman on Sunday night. Officers found him in his basement. He lives on Church Street. They said he had serious self-inflicted injuries so he's in the hospital.

"First I heard a loud crash," said Dan Niven, who lives nearby. "It was around 9:30 or so. I ran outside and saw a guy running away. I couldn't tell anything about him because it was kind of far away."

After looking around, Niven heard something else.

"I heard someone scream, help me help me," said Niven.

That scream came from a woman who was inside a car. The woman had been shot. After that, she drove through a few front yards on Church Street. The car didn't stop until she hit a home.

"All the neighbors came out," said Niven. "Everyone tried to help."

The neighbors said she talked to them. She was conscious when she was taken to the hospital.

"The one thing she said, she was determined," said Niven. "She was like, I'm not going to die here. I've got children. She had a strong will."

The shooter left the scene but police tracked him down.

"There was a handgun on the floor of the passenger side of the car," said Niven.

Investigators said the man and woman knew each other. They said the suspect was in the passenger seat of her car when he shot her.

Champaign police said they had a hard time getting the suspect to cooperate after they found him. They called in the University of Illinois Police. That officer used a taser on the man. After that, officers were able to take the suspect to the hospital for treatment. Champaign police don't have tasers.
