IRVING,TX (CBS NEWS)- Former University of Illinois football player and Dallas Cowboys nose tackle Josh Brent has been arrested and charged with intoxication manslaughter. He and another former U of I player were involved in a late night crash that resulted in the death of a teammate.

Irving Police report that Jerry Brown Jr., a 25-year old currently on the Cowboys' practice roster, was killed in the accident.

Early in the morning on Saturday, around 2:21 a.m., Brent was driving westbound in the 1400 block of the service road of SH-114 when his vehicle hit a curb and flipped at least one time before coming to rest in the middle of the service road.

When police arrived, Brent was responsive and able to speak with officers. Brown was unresponsive and transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

According to a statement from the Irving Police Department, "Officers at the scene believed alcohol was a contributing factor in the crash; therefore, Price-Brent was asked to perform field sobriety tests."

Based on the results and the officer's judgement, Brent was arrested for driving while intoxicated.

He was transferred to a local hospital for blood testing and booked into the Irving City jail. The investigation is still ongoing.

Brent has appeared in 12 games for the Cowboys this season and has recorded 22 tackles and 1.5 sacks. He was previously arrested in 2009 for driving under the influence and driving on a suspended license while at the University of Illinois.

Brown was signed to the practice squad in October.

The two were teammates at the University of Illinois.
