Canada targets local workers

CHAMPAIGN -- If you're looking for work, you might want to look outside the U.S. Canadian employers are honing in on American workers.

They say we have a skill they're short on. Eric Ferguson blogs about employment. He was looking through Craigslist one day and saw an ad for a Canadian position. He thought it was a scam but it turns out, it was legitimate. The company was recruiting unemployed people right here in Champaign.

Ferguson called the employer. She told him there's a shortage of U.S. auto technicians, mostly in Western Canada. She said more and more Canadian companies are reaching out to American workers for help. Ferguson says it's an international trend.

"I think we're going to see it more and more. The marketplace is global now. The labor force is becoming more and more global. For Canadian firms, it's pretty easy to recruit from outside of Canada."

Nearly 8,000 people are unemployed in Champaign County. Ferguson said this trend could put a lot of those people to work. But if you see an ad on Craigslist, no matter what, do your research.
