CHAMPAIGN -- The police and fire departments came together Wednesday night, all to give back to the Salvation Army. It's a first for Champaign. 80 of them are out ringing bells across the city.

A lot of people might think there's a rivalry between the two. But, they spent the day telling jokes and having a lot of fun.

The idea was tossed around when they decided it'd be fun. Not only that, they wanted to give back to the people who are there for them.

During emergencies, the Salvation Army brings out water and snacks. It's something small that makes a big difference.

"They continue the job when we go back to the fire house. They see it through all the way. It's really important with everything they do," said firefighter Mike King.

They all were in uniform but none was on duty. They're all volunteering their time.
