County Board confusion?

CHAMPAIGN COUNTY -- A new leader was elected to the county board this week, but it's causing some political tension among the members. The board's democratic caucus leader says it's as if Hillary Clinton picked John McCain as her running mate and won the presidential election as a republican.

Mike Richards says he was chosen as his party's candidate for chair last month, but this week's votes didn't go as planned. Instead, ten republicans and two democrats joined forces to choose democrat Alan Kurtz as the new chair.

The democrats have a 12-10 majority on the board, but with this latest vote, some say it's hard to tell which side is which. Republican Jon Schroeder was chosen as vice chair.

The 22 members will all be on the board together for the next two years. Richards says they'll need to try to work together to serve the voters. The chairman could not be reached for comment.
