Driver's license bill makes progress
Updated: December 5, 2012
Advocates say this bill isn't just about giving them rights, it's about making the roads safer here in Illinois. Those who qualify would have to take a test and also be required to get car insurance.
"We have a problem today with tens of thousands of undocumented immigrants who drive illegally, they haven't been tested, they often don't have insurance. We need to change that. This legislation will allow us to make giant strides in achieving that goal," said former Governor Jim Edgar.
Getting a driver's license doesn't mean they'll become legal citizens. Governor Quinn and other state leaders support the proposal.
