LE ROY-- A police K9, months from retirement, is killed under tragic circumstances. Victor the German Shepard joined the department in 2004.

He's credited with helping make several drug busts and arrests. But his life and career have been cut short.

Victor got away from his handler and ran into a road, where a school bus hit and killed him. The police chief says the loss is hard to understand.

"Dogs usually retire and they live the rest of their life with their handlers. They're a part of their families. That's how we envisioned this happening. That's not going to happen now," Gordon Beck said.

The department will raise funds to buy a memorial plaque for Victor. Grant money will be used to get a new K9 early next year.
