DECATUR -- Richland Community College is getting a state grant to build a new student center. WCIA-3's Ashley Michels tells us how it will help campus run more smoothly.

RCC is the first stop for many Central Illinois students after high school. Thanks to a new $3.5 million grant, it's hoping to make the transition a little less intimidating.

It's using the money to expand the student center. When it's done, all of the main offices and services will be under one roof. It's something school leaders say will make your first days here a lot easier.

"The way the community college has been built, we have services all over our campus that make it difficult for new students to navigate what they need in order to get started off on a good foot."

The state says it's a small investment into Illinois' future. The project will create new jobs, plus help better prepare its students for life after school.

"It's important that we have our community colleges at the ready. Ready to train students so they can do those jobs and help feed the world, heal the world and fuel the world."

Construction should get underway soon. The new space should be ready for the freshman class of 2014.
