ASHMORE -- Police say a couple who is armed and dangerous is on the loose and could be in Coles County. Police are swarming the area searching for them. They say John and Janet Cunningham were involved in a shooting Monday.

It all happened in Southern Illinois. The victim is OK, but the suspects fled the scene. Now, police are worried about others who may be in their path. WCIA-3's Megan Brilley finds out more.

The Cunningham's were last seen in Ashmore. A woman who's lived there for 30-years never expected to see what she saw Tuesday morning.

"They jumped a ditch and they just disappeared."

She says she saw the fugitives hiding from police.

"I didn't know what to think. I thought it was odd they were right there, then in the blink of an eye, they were gone."

The Cunningham's ditched their van.

"We first woke up, we saw police cars flashing in front of our neighbor's house."

Robert Weber's neighbor called police, but it was too late. The couple was long gone.

"It's something that really doesn't happen here very often. In fact, we have no trouble at all. We haven't for a long time here in this neighborhood."

Police say the Cunningham's are driving a stolen truck. It's a 1988 gray Dodge Dakota pickup truck with a black topper and Illinois license plates 383 92W. Neighbors say they stole it from a man who lives on Arrowhead Road after beating him.

"Kind of scary. Out here, we don't have a lot of close neighbors. It can be scary out here."

"I think everybody's going to be on the alert now. They'll keep their doors locked."

The Cunningham's are considered armed and dangerous. If you see them, stay away and call police.
