IROQUOIS COUNTY -- An 80-year old Good Samaritan died Wednesday night trying to help another driver who was hit by a car. It happened about 5 pm on I-57 near Onarga.

It all started with a loose tire. A 58-year old man from Tennessee pulled onto the shoulder just as his car lost its tire.

It rolled into the median. He crossed the roadway to get it, but on the way back to his car, he was hit.

The Good Samaritan from suburban Chicago saw him on the ground, stopped and dragged his body out of the roadway. As he was walking back to his car to call for help, he too was hit.

The first driver died on the scene. The Good Samaritan was taken to the hospital where he later died.

Neither driver who hit the victims has been charged with anything yet. The accidents remain under investigation.
