SPRINGFIELD -- A high school athlete is getting some national recognition for his performance on the field and in the classroom. Nate Lowis is a finalist for the U.S. Army and Football Hall of Fame Award for Excellence.

He's competing against nine other students nationwide. The 17-year-old had to write an essay on what the word "excellence" means to him. He plays football, baseball and basketball for Sacred Heart Griffin.

He says he couldn't be more excited to be considered for this award and encourages other students to stay disciplined and work hard. Lowis will find out if he wins during a special ceremony in Texas this January.
