CHAMPAIGN -- A family wants justice for its dog. The owners said their daughter was taking the chocolate lab for a walk earlier this month. That's when a pit bull attacked it. A police officer fired shots while trying to break up the fight. The lab died.

Family members said they just want some closure. Jake and Kathy Saathoff said the police chief called them Monday to offer his condolences, but there's a lot more they still want to know.

They said people in the community have reached out to them. Many asked why an officer would shoot at dogs fighting. The Saathoff's live near Centennial High School. They said other people could have been in danger.

"We also know what happened from witnesses and things and we want them to be accountable and we want that police officer to not be patrolling our streets," said Kathy.

A friend of the family started a Facebook page. It's called Justice for Dog. Dog was the chocolate lab's name. Kathy said she got a necropsy report from their vet over the weekend. It confirmed that Dog died from a gunshot wound. He was only hit one time.

No one has come forward to claim the pit bull. Champaign County's animal control director said it will be put down this week. She said the pit bull has one wound on its foot. But she can't tell if it was from a gunshot.
